Political Correctness Truly Defined (Part 2)

I want to make something perfectly clear here. I do not feel that one’s political views should have any bearing on whether or not they are accepted as artists, writers, singers, etc…The trend in Hollywood has been for decades to embrace the far left and shut out anyone with any views that deviate from that view, even if the person trying to make a living is middle of the road.

There is a view among many in society that a comic should only entertain according to the point(s) of view that are personally acceptable to them. Artists in all camps do not accept this notion as it is a form of dictating their material, or in easier terms to understand, societal censorship.  Politicians have been subject to ridicule from both sides of the spectrum but it is only when someone who is in power on the left that the specter of censorship rears its ugly head.

There were proposed rule changes to the FCC about writers and reporters that did not get put into place because those rules interfere with the first amendment and since the media is largely “owned” anyhow, it was a waste of taxpayer funds to make such rules. If the people of the United States wanted government controlled media, they’d start moving elsewhere.

Reporters, if they have any sense of ethics, should be reporting the story truthfully, without interjecting what they think should happen as a result of the evolving stories coming into place. The people do not need a journalist to help them make up their minds. They have a sense of what they feel is right and what they feel is wrong.  In fact, if anything, viewers should find any reporter that takes it upon himself/herself to try to change their views on any issue to be insulting. That is not their job. If they want to get preached at by anyone, they will turn off the television and go to church. The audience, for the most part, wants the story–without how  the person reporting “feels” about it.

Both the media and Hollywood have worked very hard to be the self-appointed moral compass of this nation and that is the last thing they should be. Individuals can decide the course of their own destinies without their advice. For the most part if they are not paid to entertain, they are paid to inform. Personally, unless I’m watching the news or PBS, I do not want to hear about political topics. I go to movies to escape these things. I go to concerts to escape these things. When those in these fields try to tell me I should have point of view A rather , point of view B, I tend to get rather angry.

I do realize that some acts in general ARE politically motivated and write their music accordingly. If the fans want that, that is their decision. Those acts are doing what they think is their “mission” in life which is to bring awareness. There is nothing wrong with that.  The same holds true for writers who make it known what the purpose is for script A or script B. However if it’s not on a topic that has my interest, I won’t go or watch the show.  However that is NOT the job of the journalist and they need to get back to reporting the news and stop giving 3 minutes of story and 30 minutes of editorializing.

When writers insert politics into a script with what otherwise would be a very good drama that isn’t pushing their views, I change the channel. I do not want to watch a TV sitcom and hear about how good Obamacare is. That is not why I watch TV. Thank God the Brits aren’t doing that crap. However getting money from grants to do so is an incentive. I’m sure if the GOP had done that, the left would be screaming bloody murder about taxpayer funds going toward that. Well I would also, but it is because taxpayer funds shouldn’t be going to pay for advertising government programs and campaigning on mainstream TV shows on MY DIME.

We have a 17 trillion-dollar deficit and that is the last thing government money should be going to…Common sense should dictate as much.

As for Hollywood, they should have followed Clint Eastwood’s example when he hired both Tim Robbins and Sean Penn to be in “Mystic River”. He hired objectively and their political views didn’t make a bit of difference. He hired them on the merits of their talent.  Remember Matt McConaughey’s Oscar acceptance speech and how Hollywood cringed? I hate to burst their bubble that speech was indicative of a more “new age” view than anything, which many there embrace.  Hollywood, by exhibiting such bias, is alienating  the movie going audience. As they continue to lose more at the box office due to this and the rising prices of tickets, they should bear in mind that if they cannot be open to viewers of all factions, this trend will continue.

That being said, if anyone is open to the idea of opening up an Independent movie studio in TX, I know of a place that is for sale in a desert location that would make an excellent spot due to it’s historical significance alone–for a cool $2.9 million bucks and you’d better snatch it up before a certain studio in California decides to do so (if they get the idea)! I just had to throw that in, but have a great day!

Texspearean Experience–“Merchant of Venice”….Nana’s version…Well, a Snippet Anyway! ;-)

I am working on a contemporary version of the Merchant of Venice–by William Shakespeare. However, this version is going to be written in the Texspearean language for those who have trouble with reading the great bard’s work.  It is my hope that he has a sense of humor because if he doesn’t, and reincarnation is real (which I don’t think it is-sorry), then with my luck he’d come back as the person who stomps me into the ground–because, I’d return as a  friggin’ cockroach!

Seriously this thing is playing out in my mind…That can be very dangerous.  Be afraid…Be VERY afraid.  What you are about to read is not something you will find in the world which you now know, but you will find it only in, “The Tina Zone” when she’s sleepy…This is part of my journal, folks. DISCLAIMER: I do not take XANAX or PROZAC!

The woman dozed off for a bit…She was exhausted from her long workday, but was thinking heavily about “The Merchant of Venice” before turning off the light and closing her eyes for the night…For some strange reason she saw a contemporary scene played out at the end of this short little dream where someone uttered the line, “No s***, Shylock!”, at which point she woke up for a bit, but as she dozed off, this scenario crossed her mind:

“…NERISSA How like you the young German, the Duke of Saxony‘s nephew?

PORTIA Very vilely in the morning, when he is sober, and
most vilely in the afternoon, when he is drunk: when
he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and
when he is worst, he is little better than a beast:
and the worst fall that ever fell, I hope I shall
make shift to go without him….”

In contemporary language in today’s world, she knows how Portia’s answering line would open in such a version…It would start with two words: “…Bitch, please!” and then go on to “…I can’t stand the dude!…” among other things.  Then she would explain the reasons for hoping she could just be left to her own devices or run off to join the French Foreign Legion…”

Then again, that is the world of Tina when she’s tired and dozing off.  Have a great week! I know I will! I at least hope it makes someone laugh. I love reading Shakespeare, but when it comes to talking about it, my wires ALWAYS end up crossed and I end up creating this stuff one beast at a time!  I do love comedy, so that’s probably part of  it.

Ohhhh Boy! Nana’s Experimenting! Anyone Ready for 12/21? Atomic Eggnog, Maybe?

Okay…THIS is going to be very short…I have a decision to make and I need a few foodies to help me figure this one out.  I wanna have an end of the world party on 12/21…Here is the question: How does one  spice up something as boring as eggnog can be with something hotter than Southern Comfort?   I mean, can we infuse Habanero and hot cinnamon rum with it or what?  Let me know what you think, but I’m calling this crap “Atomic Eggnog“!

I think I”ve got it….

Eggnog

Well start with an OLD Recipe. Use Jim Beam Whiskey AND Jim Beam Devils Cut OR Red Stag (SPICED) for those parts of it.

AND THEN for the BLAST ADD this:

1/2 Habanero to the pot or a shot of Goldenschlaager’s if you’re too chicken for the pepper!

If that don’t blast us off, nothing will!

I Simply DO NOT Get It…Nana’s Practical Joke!

Many of my friends who know me know that I am anything BUT a prude.  I don’t believe in changing the proper name of something to make it more appealing to the subjugated masses of America.  That being said I am putting something on my blog never done to the best of my knowledge. I am putting a pair of TIT pictures on here. That is right! A Pair of Tits!  To make it easier–two pictures of two kinds of tits!  Now anyone can use my link for a practical joke and say, “For a nice looking pair of tits–check this link!”   That will teach those with a dirty mind to come here, won’t it? At least I am good for a laugh or two…

Here are the blue tits!

I think it is the part of the responsibility of EVERY writer to elicit laughter from the audience once in a while… ***Grins sheepishly here***! If you were sent here by a friend and cannot take a joke, then I’ll say to you in my best TEXSPEAREAN manner: “Don’t blame me so harshly for I didn’t name the critters! However if it should offend ‘ye then ’tis you that hath a burr in yer craw! And jus’ so ye know, them Brits have two species: Great Tits and Blue Tits and notwithstanding my dig forthwith ‘ye know I believe they love those tits!”

Well you can’t blame me! After all, I didn’t name ’em did I?

There Are Still New Acts Out There…But the Roots ALWAYS Rule!

In an age where most bands are beginning to whine way too much for my liking, I’ve turned to my old country roots and to the music my parents listened to as a kid–lots of standards and old movie songs.  My grandparents always had music playing on the television, whether it was the Grand Ol’ Opry or some religious music shows that aired prior.  Then there was always Hee Haw!  I also heard a lot of Frank Sinatra music, Dean Martin and a few others growing up.

Country, blues and jazz have a rich heritage in this country, but in the youth, they don’t have that same fire running through the veins that leads to what inspired some of the greats to write music as they did in years past.  Hard work and ingenuity are now replaced with the internet and mass production of music on such a scale that it seems to me that the market is becoming too saturated with these services to download a lot of music–and many under-deserving artists keep getting over exposure to the point that people cannot stand to listen to them any longer.  Want a good example of how this can happen?  I’ll give you one using a song released in the 1990’s.  Remember My Heart Will Go On from the Titanic soundtrack?  I do! Boy that song kicked ass, but it got waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy too much airplay and that’s what killed it.

I actually miss going to the market and buying the music I want to buy–actually putting my hands on the albums or the cd’s.  If you can remember all the posters of who you thought were great musicians on your walls, that you clipped from Tiger Beat or 16 magazine, then you know the type of feeling I am referring to.  Now in my pre-teens, I confess that I was into the teen idol stuff.  There wasn’t a single girl in my class who didn’t have a huge crush on one of the Osmond Brothers or David Cassidy.  I was the oddball that loved the Jackson 5 too.  You see, parents tended to buy our music and my dad would not let me get the Jackson 5 stuff until I made my own money.  However, he went into deeper shock when I bought George Harrison‘s “All Things Must Pass” album.

At 13 I began to crave real music.  I began writing real lyrics–and to me George Harrison, Paul McCartney and John Lennon were, in the words of young people today, “The shit!” I also love Stevie WonderSongs in the  Key of Life is one of the greatest albums of all time. I hated the world around me and wrote about that for the most part.  I have returned to music after almost 29 years. For a while I stopped because I listened to everyone tell my why I can’t do anything rather than the one voice inside of myself that tells me I can.

What I listen to inspires me, but I cannot sing the music that inspires me to write. I don’t know why.  I’ll listen for hours and never allow a single  note of it to escape my lips…Europe is a whole new world.  The music is different as well. People over there actually enjoy what I enjoy.  I want to share the things with you that made me realize that there is hope for the American music scene yet. One of them is this lady.  Her name is Lara Fabian:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Tg_PTY3nI8

Then there is this guy who seemed to pop out of a box from Bulgaria in 2009…It was still another year before I heard him sing, dammit!

http://www.youtube.com/user/ActorBenCross?blend=21&ob=5

I never knew Ben Cross could sing prior to that…Then again, I lived in a f***ing bunker of my own making.  Sometimes I still hide in it too.  In case you are wondering, he is probably best known over here for his work in Chariots of Fire and for playing Sarek in the last Star Trek film.

Now before you start, don’t start slamming older musicians.  The well ran pretty dry as of late and these musicians still have it going on, man…This guy has a resonating light about him and as long as he has that, I support him–PERIOD.  Some of you younger artists should take a few pointers from him because he has a better tone and range than a lot of us do.  IF you don’t believe me, listen to him.  As for me, I’m too much like Pink…I do what the hell I want and write what the hell I want.  When I need a wake up call, I go to the roots–the old music and Ben does it well.

The THIRD thing came from Lauren Cross.  It was a link to THIS station:

http://www.kcrw.com/music/eclectic24

You can also listen to this  KCRW    These stations have a little more to offer than my usual, eardrum bursting fare!  When riding with me, I tend to listen to what your mother warned you about!  If you dare to let me drive and I’ve got Enter Sandman by Metallica playing, be ready to get stopped because I get tickets every damned time!   The same holds true for when I am playing I Want it All by Queen.

Now I do like hearing the old “Nirvana” music and some Goo Goo Dolls.  John Rzeznik knows how to put a lyric together that messes with my head every time and I like that in a songwriter…It just seems to me that the old fire died out when the 90’s went.  Once in a while, you get a band like Arcade Fire or something but they don’t hang around for too long. Sorry but it is true…Of all the Best New Artist winners at the Grammy Awards in the past 10 years, I see that there are 2-3 acts that got it that NOBODY in the mainstream seems to have heard of–Esperanza Spaulding being the latest…They gave it to Nora Jones too (who did NOT deserve it–sorry) when Averil Levigne should have gotten it.  If you look at the list of who has won, you will see that while they do sell records–the mainstream (working class American) listeners don’t care one iota for their music.  People need to realize that the academy votes on this.  I am glad and surprised that Maroon 5 won when they did.  They are GOOD!

I want to share two more songs with you that I love to listen to.  Here is the first one by Shinedown (Second Chance):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H25ORRgLxdA&feature=fvsr

And here is the 2nd one by Hinder (Lips of an Angel):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiSfTyrvJlg&ob=av2e

These two bands aren’t “special” or “great”…Their sound is honest, raw and pure and that is what I look for in any artist regardless of the genre.   That in mind, I want to mention a  new band from Cross Plains, Texas.  I got the pleasure of meeting them in Mingus, TX the other night.  The band is “Bars Lane”.   IF you are a manager, they need one.  Friend them on FB and get in touch with them, but I do believe they are going to make it.  When you hear this, you’ll know why I am mentioning them on this blog.  Their lyrics are honest and they have a lot more besides this one.  Their drummer wrote the song “Blessed” which I featured below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hLAMLQPDOE

If you guys like Cross Canadian Ragweed, you’ll love Bars Lane, too.  It’s that simple.

Here’s a pic and a link to their FB page too:

They are also on reverbnation.com  as well.   Have a great week–especially all of you in Texas!  Let’s support these guys!
